Excellent quality plywood jigsaw puzzle, manufactured in France, but for the American store City of Paris in San Francisco. The cutting style is semi-interlocking and includes incredibly intricately cut figural shaped pieces, a couple of which have detail extending into adjacent pieces. The puzzle is estimated to be of c1940-1950 manufacture, showing similar cutting, box style and figural shapes as this Course de cheveaux puzzle known to be from c1941.
The artwork is a section from a painting by the Ukrainian artist Ilya Yefimovich Repin, carrying an expanded title of Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks to Sultan IV of the Ottoman Empire.
