Palace, The
Very limited production, London-based brand of wooden jigsaw puzzles, estimated to be of c1920s manufacture.
Thanks to expert information provided by Anne Williams, the "Palace" brand name is understood to have been used by the Emell Toy Manufacturing Company, who manufactured wooden playthings, including jigsaw puzzles, at this time. The "ML" logo, which features on the box lid is believed to refer to Mr. Littauer, presumably the company owner.
Anne has also been able to provide images of a trade show toy stall, of c1916/17 origin, showing that same encircled "ML" logo, along with detailed information from a February 1920 edition of the "Games and Toys" trade magazine. Very interesting to see the image of the "H.M.S. Jigsaw" example, surely an idea seen by Scottish Toys Ltd, leading to their similarly designed, albeit far more complex, c1930s Bildajig range. Thank you Anne.
