Byron's Dream

The image shows Byron’s Dream by Ford Madox Brown, dated 1875 – which illustrates Byron’s 1816 poem, The Dream. A callow, teenage Byron is besotted with the older girl Mary Chaworth - but she is watching the distant approaching horseman – Jack Musters, who she would marry in 1805. She broke Byron’s heart – when he overheard her describing him as ‘the lame, bashful schoolboy lord’.

The landscape shows the Nottinghamshire plain from Annesley, with Newstead Abbey, Byron’s home in the distance. The pair are accompanied by Byron's faithful dog Boatswain, whose memorial still stands at Newstead Abbey.
